What's even more beautiful than a cello? Ten cellos! Chamber music is one of the great joys of life for our orchestra musicians. Here, seven members of our cello group and our orchestra academy come together with their colleague Sheku Kanneh-Mason, who is our current artist in residence, for a musically diverse programme.
Since 2010, ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing in the Bode Museum. The concerts, lasting just over an hour, take place in the Gobelin Hall and feature music from past centuries. Visitors can combine the concerts with other museum activities, such as an exhibition visit or a meal at the museum café.
Maurice Ravel's imaginative and even humorous La valse is a tribute to the waltz and Johann Strauss II. Originally, the working title for this music was "Vienne", then he changed it from the French spelling to German, "Wien", before finally deciding that the fitting title would be La valse. Ravel and Argentine Alberto Ginastera frame the program, the latter with fiery dance in the form of Malambo.Witold Lutosławski is one of the most significant composers of the 20th century. In his Fourth Symphony, which also became his last, lyrically tasteful sounds are combined with rhythmic elegance. He himself conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the world premiere on the occasion of his 80th birthday.Before the interval, we also hear two works for saxophone: Villa-Lobos's exuberant and warm Fantasia for Saxophone and Small Orchestra, and a newly written saxophone concerto by British composer Dani Howard, composed for Jess Gillam. The vibrant English saxophonist Jess Gillam made her debut at Konserthuset in February 2023, as one of the season's Rising Stars. She charts her own course and is a shining example of how a new generation of musicians revitalizes the genre.

There is nothing boring about Sean Shibe. The Scottish guitarist had demonstrated early on in his career that he not only has extremely agile fingers, but also a keen sense of programme combinations. He makes old and brand-new music, electronic and acoustic, loud and soft come together. The supposed showpieces on the classical guitar are of little interest to him; he prefers searching for particular, even unknown pieces, makes his own arrangements or commissions new works. As a result, he had already attracted attention as a »Rising Star« at the Elbphilharmonie in January 2024 – he now returns with a new genre-busting programme. Centuries old, Scottish lute pieces encounter Spanish and Latin American guitar music of the 20th century here: while Alberto Ginastera only wrote the one, but all the more splendid, guitar sonata, Heitor Villa-Lobos played guitar himself and as a result dedicated several pieces to the instrument, which now rank among the favourites of many guitarists. After the interval, Sean Shibe switches to electric guitar and turns up his volume control slightly further again: besides music by the medieval composer Hildegard von Bingen, you can hear »Lad« by Julia Wolfe. Originally composed for entirely new (!) bagpipes, Sean Shibe has already created his own version for his album »softLOUD«, which brings early Scottish lute music full circle.
Led by conductor Bianca Maretti, the amateur orchestra (Orchestre des amateurs), accompanied and prepared by professional musicians, pays tribute to music of the Americas.
